VANCOUVER, Canada, 07/18 - Canadian Chinese has been playing an increasingly important role in the country`s political and social life, said Joseph Volpe, minister of citizenship and immigration, on Sunday.
Most of the Canadian Chinese, no matter which part of China they come from, were 'dynamic' and they have made important contributions to Canada`s social and economic development,Volpe told Xinhua prior to attending an annual fund-raising event held by the United Chinese Community Enrichment Services Society(S.U.C. C.E.S.S.) in Vancouver`s scenic Stanley park Sunday morning.
'The Chinese immigrants have great values: an emphasis on good education for their children; a progressive attitude towards life and a desire to be involved in the society,' he said, adding 'that is exactly what Canada needs to grow.'
'What you see today is a clear example, the Chinese community has transformed the city (of Vancouver). If you go back 20 to 25 years, it would be a different place.' Volpe said.'It is exactly all the same in other parts of the country.' The Chinese immigrants reportedly exceeds 400,000 in Vancouver, the third largest city of Canada.
The minister also expressed satisfaction over the current bilateral relations between Canada and China.
'The relationship has been good, and will continue to be better. ' said Volpe, looking forward to a notable increase of Chinese tourists coming to Canada in the short future.
'I am delighted that China has set Canada as the preferred destination country for Chinese tourists. What we need to do is to put an effective mechanism in place so that we can receive Chinese visitors more quickly, more easily and more frequently.'
